Geochemical characterization of extraterrestrial impact events recorded in sedimentary rocks

Speaker: Dott.ssa Honami Sato (Department of Geosciences, University of Padova) Thursday, 4th november – 4:30 PM | Aula Arduino

04.11.2021

More than three decades have passed since the discovery of anomalies in the abundance of platinum group elements (PGEs: Os, Ir, Ru, Rh, Pt, Pd) across the sections of Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) strata from Gubbio (Italy) and Caravaca (Spain), which have been attributed to a bolide impact.

Geosciences and geoenergy: will there be a future beyond the black gold era?

Speaker: Prof. Andrea Moscariello University of Geneva (Switzerland) – Visiting professor Dipartimento Geoscienze

27.05.2021

In order to cope with the climate changes observed in recent decades accompanied by weather instability, excessive periods of drought, catastrophic events such as hurricanes or torrential rains and the threat of unstoppable sea level rise, in 2015 many nations signed the Paris Agreement to limit anthropogenic global warming. To achieve these long-term goals, countries aim to peak global greenhouse gas emissions as soon as possible to achieve a climate-neutral world by mid-century.

Supercomputing of earthquakes: Unraveling the dynamics of multi-fault rupture cascades, tsunami earthquakes and induced seismicity

Speaker: Dr. Alice Gabriel - Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences - Munich University (Germany)

25.05.2021

Earthquakes are highly non-linear and multiscale processes fracturing the Earth’s crust, while large and small events can have socio-economically destructive consequences. Using a physics-based description of earthquakes, high-performance computing and modern numerical methods sheds light on the dynamics, and severity of earthquake behaviour and enables an unparalleled degree of realism in forward modeling.

Historical mining sites in SW Sardinia (Italy): biomineral processes, environmental resilience and implications for risk analysis

Speaker: Prof. Giovanni De Giudici - Dipartimento di Scienze Chimiche e Geologiche - Università di Cagliari (Italy)

18.05.2021

Mine polluted areas account for ca. 0.1 per cent of the total land surface. Mine wastes are transported by rivers to the oceans resulting also there in chemical pollution. Mine pollution, thus, must be considered a global environmental problem. However, we still have poor knowledge on the global impact of chemical pollution and the response of our ecosystem to mine pollution perturbation.

Socio-Hydrogeology and the power of transdisciplinary sciences

Speaker: Dr. Viviana Re - Dipartimento di Scienze della Terra – Università di Pisa (Italy)

11.05.2021

Socio-hydrogeology has been recently proposed as a new approach targeted to the assessment of the reciprocity between people and groundwater. This approach roots its basis in transdisciplinary sciences, and in the belief that addressing the complex nature of the water cycle with a holistic approach can effectively lead to equitable access and long-term sustainability of groundwater resources.
