The Department of Geosciences of the University of Padua, in collaboration with Fassa Bortolo, is organizing the seminar "Burnt lime: the role of an industrial mineral in steelmaking", which will take place on November 27, 2024, at 10:30 AM, in room 2G of the department. The event is part of the course "Analysis of Mineral Resources and Industrial Derivatives" (AMRID), included in the Master’s Degree program in Environmental Geology and Earth Dynamics.

The seminar will explore the role of lime in steel production, with a specific focus on the practice of slag foaming, crucial in modern steelworks. Following an overview of the history and production methods of lime, strategies to reduce its environmental impact and processes related to steel production will also be discussed.

The seminar is aimed at students of the curricula Geologia applicata alla difesa del suolo (in Italian) and Earth Dynamics (in English), but it is also open to a broader audience interested in the topic.

The Speaker
The seminar will be led by Giovanni Baldo, geologist and Product Manager at Fassa Bortolo, a well-established company in the lime industry. A graduate of the Department of Geosciences in 2016, Baldo has gained solid experience in the industrial minerals sector, focusing on new product development, market analysis, and technical support for clients. He is currently dedicated to producing high-quality lime for the steel industry and other applications.
