Geologic and Planetary Mapping Winter School will be held online from 7 to 11 February 2022
Are you a geologist with a passion for planetary science? Do you want to become a planetary cartographer?
The new edition of the Geologic and Planetary Mapping Winter School is coming around again: the event, co-funded by the Europlanet-GMAP and the University of Padova, will be held online in the week of February 7-11 2022 (CET) and it is the perfect occasion to receive an overview of the technical and scientific skills needed by the next generation of planetary mappers.
Planetary data for geological mapping has played an important role since the beginning of the space age and right now technology is developing faster and faster: this is why new specialized expertises are increasingly requested.
This year the Planetary Mapping Winter School will be dedicated to the process of creating planetary geologic maps on the Moon, Mercury and Mars and will include frontal lectures, practical demonstrations and group-work activities.
The covered topics are:
- Introduction to features and processes specific to Solar System objects.
- Basics of remote sensing and multispectral data exploitation
- GIS usage, based on QGIS Open Source software (project creation, and layout)
- Practical collaborative mapping with a dedicated instructor on each planetary body (1 full day each)
- Principles of crater counting
- Geologic cross-sections and stratigraphic sections creation
- Seminars and talks from invited international guests
Registrations are free and the deadline is January 31. Withdrawal will be possible any time before the beginning of the school (notification needed). The winter school is open to students, graduate students and postdocs.
Last year with more than 200 attendees from 22 countries all over the world, the first Planmap Winter School has been very successful. Don’t miss this edition: you will have the opportunity to collaborate and have direct feedback on your works from scientists and expert mappers from Europe and all over the world's best planetary Institutes.
In addition to the Department of Geosciences of the University of Padova, the Planetary Mapping Winter School sees the collaboration of Institute of Astrophysics and Space Planetology in Rome - INAF and its Padova section, Geological Survey of Italy (ISPRA), G. D’Annunzio University in Chieti (Pescara), German Aerospace Center-DLR (Germany), Jacobs University (Bremen, Germany), Westfälische Wilhelms-University in Münster -WWU (Germany), Space Research Center of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw (Poland) and China University of Geosciences in Wuhan (China).
