Dr. Alvise Finotello, former PhD student at the Department of Geosciences at the University of Padua, was awarded the 2021 Dick Chorley Medal by the British Society of Geomorphology.

The award recognizes the outstanding paper “Field migration rates of tidal meanders recapitulate fluvial morphodynamics (Finotello et al., 2018)”, published in PNAS, in which the authors demonstrate how meandering tidal channels, a critical component of coastal tidal landscapes, evolve through mechanisms by all means similar to that of their fluvial counterparts.

The research was carried out by Dr. Finotello during his PhD studies at the Department of Geosciences and was supervised by Prof. Andrea D’Alpaos and Prof. Massimiliano Ghinassi. The main outcomes of the study will be presented during the Chorley Lecture at the 2021 Annual General Meeting of the British Society of Geomorphology (online, 13th-15th September 2021).
