Drones, AI, and Big Data: The New Frontiers of Hydrogeological Risk Prevention

New Technologies and Hydrogeological Risk: What Impacts?

On February 22, 2025, as part of the seminar series GeoSguardi: Geosciences for the Challenges of the 21st Century, Professor Filippo Catani will lead a session on the role of new technologies in understanding and mitigating hydrogeological risks. The event will take place at the San Gaetano Cultural Center (Spazio 35) in Padua, starting at 5:30 PM, with free admission.

Advanced Technologies for Risk Management

Hydrogeological instability events, increasingly frequent due to climate change, present complex challenges for researchers and professionals in the field. The interactions between the biosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, and atmosphere make it difficult to predict and mitigate the effects of landslides and floods. However, technological innovation offers increasingly advanced tools to tackle these issues.

The seminar will explore how technologies used in different domains—from drones to autonomous driving, from satellite navigation to big data analysis—can be applied to hydrogeological risk management. The goal is to demonstrate how advanced tools, often employed in everyday and commercial contexts, can be adapted to improve the prediction and prevention of natural disasters.

The GeoSguardi Series

This event is part of the GeoSguardi: Geosciences for the Challenges of the 21st Century series, organized by the Department of Geosciences at the University of Padua. The series, running from January to April features four seminars addressing pressing scientific and social issues through the lens of Earth sciences:

  • January 18, 2025 – Earthquake Prediction (Prof. Giulio Di Toro)

  • February 22, 2025 – Drones, AI, and Big Data: The New Frontiers of Hydrogeological Risk Prevention (Prof. Filippo Catani)

  • March 22, 2025 – The Venice Lagoon in a Sea of Problems (Prof. Andrea D’Alpaos)

  • April 12, 2025 – "Building" a Sustainable Future: Where Do We Stand? (Prof. Luca Valentini)

The series is part of the Excellence Project "Geosciences for Sustainable Development" (2023-2027), funded by the Ministry of University and Research.
